Following the 9th Battalions assault on the Merville Gun Battery, the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonal Terence Otway, sits on the steps of the Calvary Cross, the post-action rendez-vous on the outskirts of the position, at around 0530 hours.

The assault on the Merville Battery was a brave and daring mission by the British 9th Battalion, 6th Airborne Division, which is recognised as an important milestone of World War 2
